Surgical Care

Surgical care may be used to address all kinds of pet health issues. Whether to treat acute illness or injury or prevent a future problem, veterinary surgeries at Animalcare Portmore are always conducted with the utmost compassion and attention to your pet’s safety and comfort, as well as your peace of mind.

  • Common pet surgical procedures we perform:
  • Spay and neuter (see below)
  • Tumor/mass removal
  • Exploratory/diagnostic surgeries
  • Wound repair/management
  • Foreign body removal

If the required surgical procedure is too complex to be done on-site in Portmore, we will refer your pet to our main hospital in Kingston for treatment.

Spay & Neuter (Castration)

Spaying and neutering are surgeries that have tremendous benefits for your pet. During the procedures the reproductive organs are removed; spays remove the uterus and ovaries, and neuters (a nicer word for "castrations") remove the testicles. The procedure ends the heat cycle for your female pet and the desire to mate in male animals, which will result in positive changes in their behaviour while giving them many health benefits. Additionally, these procedures can help your pet live a longer, healthier life by reducing the likelihood of your pet straying away from home and fighting, and significantly reduces the occurrences of certain cancers and tumors. Spaying females or castrating males eliminates unwanted litters, which contribute to the many thousands of stray dogs and feral cats that are part of the Jamaican landscape.
